Beverages Make the Holidays Better!

November 16th, 2016

Good evening! The holidays are upon us, and what better way to tolerate enjoy time with the family than some amazing adult beverages? Any of these concoctions would be a great way to end the evening meal. Or for brunch. Either way.

Let’s start with my personal favorite, Coquito. This is what regular egg nog wishes it could grow up to be. It it some serious coconutty goodness, and a must-have during the holidays. Or a random Thursday.

Coquito

Hot apple cider is a holiday staple. Try this buttered recipe to add in a little extra delicious.

Cider

Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate… so much yes! This site actually had quite a few recipes for making spiked hot chocolate, but this one was my favorite. If, like me, you think the recipe sounds too labor-intensive, I suggest just making a mug of hot chocolate, and adding a healthy shot of salted caramel-flavored vodka.

In case none of the above tickle your fancy, here are ten more to choose from, including a regular egg nog for those of you that don’t like coconut (weirdos). I chose the Grinch as the thumbnail, because he is my favorite holiday character.

Hopefully, you will find these beverages as tantalizing as I did, and they will help you ease through the hoiday chaos. Enjoy, and see you next time!

Tomatoes? Seriously, More Tomatoes?

October 18th, 2016

If, like my family, you put out tomatoes each summer, then this time of year typically finds you with a ton of extra produce. The plants are pushing to get out their remaining fruit before the first frost, and that botanic desperation results in an overabundance of red goodness. By this time, you are probably tired of tomato sandwiches and salads. With the weather cooling off, here are some heartier, warmer ideas on how to use the remaining tomatoes from your garden. Or, from the grocer. Either way.

Tomato Pie

This picture links to a recipe from myrecipies.com. I believe in giving credit where credit is due, but if you hate a bunch of pop-up ads, the recipe below is also excellent. Lovely photo, though, and I didn’t have one on hand.

2 frozen deep-dish pie shells (or be an overachiever and make your own)
1 large onion, sliced
4-5 medium to large tomatoes, sliced and drained of juice
Basil, chopped
1 cup mayonnaise (of course, Duke’s is best)
4 cups shredded white cheddar and muenster cheese (blend)
2 tbsp hot sauce (Franks)
1 tbsp butter
Salt & Pepper
1.  Start caramelizing the onion in a pan with olive oil and butter.
2.  Pre-bake the frozen pie crusts at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes (consult package instructions)
3.  Salt tomatoes and allow to drain in a colander.  Press with paper towels to remove excess juice.
4.  Layer pie shells with onions, tomatoes, and basil.
5.  Mix together in a bowl, cheese, mayonnaise, hot sauce, pepper and salt.
6.  Spread mixture over layered pie.
7.  Bake for 25-45 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly. And delicious.

Tomato Sauce
wine-sauce
I’d say it’s pretty obvious that I took this picture. Hmmm… wonder where that link goes, then? As with the above recipe, I got this one from another member of the Chaney Group (thanks, Justin! And Travis!). You may note that it differs slightly from my own recipe.

10-12 tomatoes
2 onions, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
2 large carrots, diced (nope)
3 cloves garlic, minced
Dried Herbs: Basil, oregano, sage, parsley, salt, and pepper (tarragon instead of sage)
2 tbsp sugar (nope)
2 tbsp butter (olive oil)
Red wine (I just pour some in, then drink the rest. Red blends work really well.)
1.  Prep the tomatoes.  Start by cutting out the cores of the tomatoes.  Then, slice through the skin slightly to make an X shape on the bottoms.  Boil tomatoes in batches for 1-2 minutes or until skin start to slightly peel away.  Then immediately blanch the tomatoes in ice water.  Once cooled completely, remove the skin and discard.  Crush the tomatoes into a large bowl.  Crush over a strainer if you want the sauce seedless.
2.  Heat olive oil and butter in a large dutch oven or pot on medium high heat.  Once hot, add onions to cook for 1-2 minutes.  When lightly browned, add carrots, garlic, and green pepper.  Salt and pepper.  Let these cook on medium for 4-5 minutes.
3.  Add tomatoes and herbs to the pot and bring to a boil.
4.  Add the sugar, reduce heat to low and simmer for at least 2 hours, covered, longer if possible.  Check and stir sauce periodically.
5.  Keep simmering, uncovered until juice reduces to desired consistency.
6.  Serve with your favorite pasta!  Also makes a great lasagna (allow to reduce longer for thicker sauce).

It was brought to my attention that instructions on canning would also be good, in case you don’t feel like cooking all weekend. You can find some good ones here. Well, time to go finish my mystery ingredient sauce. See you next Tuesday!

Costumes for the Crankier Partygoer

October 11th, 2016

Even though I have a cold, it is blog time. Since Halloween is fast-approaching, and I’m already cranky, I decided to look for costumes for the upcoming party season. I love costumes, especially of the ridiculous variety, but I am not a fan of parties. Mainly because groups of people tend to be found there, and they require you to step outside. I’d much rather put on a Pickachu suit and drink wine with my cats. This time of year, though, gatherings abound like political arguements on Facebook, and well-meaning friends and family guilt you into leaving the utopia that is your house. So many different things come up when you search for party garb, let’s see…

404 Costumes

Well… look at that. I’m already done. Thanks, Amazon! See you next Tuesday!

Fall is Here, Time for Foliage!

September 27th, 2016

I successfully avoided blogging for some time, but was informed that I must start the shenanigans again. Since Fall is upon us, it is almost leaf season in the High Country.  It is rumored that this year will be one of longest, most colorful autumns in recent history. Here are some sites that will point you in the direction of spectacular foliage:

High Country Host offers all kinds of  places to look for color updates, and locations to best enjoy the leaves this time of year.

Leaf 3

The High Country’s very own ASU Department of Biology also keeps their site updated weekly with leaf-related information, and offers a map to show the best times for color in the different areas of the High Country.

Blue Ridge Mountain Life offers their top 25 picks to get out and experience the mountains’ most stunning of seasons:

If you feel like getting out for the day, Only in Your State  has mapped out a full fall foliage road trip, which will take around 6 hours:

Even if you decide to stay closer to home, there should be no shortage of glory to see this fall. Go check out the foliage, and we will see you next Tuesday!

Gifts of Awesomeness at Local Shops

December 15th, 2015

As we are now at the halfway point of December, the holidays (and gift deadlines) loom ever closer. I have successfully managed to get three presents so far. For me, that’s actually pretty good, considering that I normally do my shopping on the 24th. Since I still have so much left to do, I thought it would be helpful to my fellow procrastinators to compile a list of local shops in both of our areas that have awesomely unique gifts for everyone left on your list. Especially if, like me, your list still has almost everyone left on it. Shopping locally supports the economy in your immediate area, lets you avoid having to pay wait for shipping, and allows you to find something more thoughtful than this. Everybody wins!

Let’s start with the High Country:

Anna Bananas

Right in Downtown Boone, we have Anna Banana’s. This is great place to find all things

fashion-related  for anyone. You also have the bonus of being able to consign your own

stuff, making it possible to get some great gifts, and not spend nearly as much. Woohoo!

SFHheader

Also right in Downtown are The Shoppes at Farmers Hardware. This place has gifts in pretty much any category, and many of them are handmade by local artists.

MtnManLogo400d     RockDimensions-Logo

      Spawn Climb

If you have someone more adventurous on your list, Footsloggers and Rock Dimensions have got you covered. Rock climbing is amazing, and has become a family tradition for us whenever my sister comes to the High Country. (That’s my son from our last climb in July.) If climbing an actual rock face is a little too intimidating, the rock wall at Footsloggers is also a lot of fun, and they have all manner of climbing/outdoor gear gifts available.

Want more options? Go here.

Ok, Charlotte area peeps, your turn:

1374886651

I know, not technically in Charlotte, but it is just right outside Meck County, and a very short trip from 85. Much like the Shoppes at Farmers above, this place offers a wide variety of gifts. Anybody on your list that loves all things antique/vintage will have no shortage of gift options here.

croplog3

Located in actual Charlotte is PaperSkyscraper. This is the place to go if you need gifts for someone with eclectic taste, or a sense of humor.

If you have anyone on your list outside of the area, like in VA (where I will be next week… again), both of these make fantastic gifts for the beer enthusiast. Jam Session (NoDa) and Copper (OMB) are my personal favorites, and will be making the trip to VA with me.

Speaking of NoDa… go here for many more local gifting options.

Get to it, so you aren’t stuck in Wal-Mart on the 24th, trying to not buy the same gifts you did last year. Not that I am speaking from experience, or anything. Happy shopping, and see you next Tuesday! (Maybe… depends on how much drinking celebrating my family does.)

Gifts for the Star Wars Fan in Your Life

December 8th, 2015

Unless you live my dream life are a recluse, you are probably aware that Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out on the 18th. If, like me, you have a total looneypants superfan of all things Star Wars in your life, you may be wondering what to get him that doesn’t involve a child’s building blocks, or having to purchase a pricey gaming console. Since the newest movie isn’t out yet, most of these gifts relate to the Star Wars franchise as a whole, as there is no way to tell if one of the new characters will be another Jar Jar (no, please- that voice, ugh). So, here are some Star Wars gifts that don’t suck. But first, a picture of my living room rug (ignore the coffee stain, I have cats):

The pic will take you to ThinkGeek, where you can purchase your own Death Star stain-hiding gift.

Since I am inherently lazy super efficient, here is Buzzfeed doing my job for me, to start. I particularly liked the chopsticks, cutting board, and fork. Most likely because they are food-related. Food is my favorite.

ThinkGeek has an entire page dedicated to Star Wars, with all manner of awesomeness in the gifting department.

If you would rather help support the individual artist, Etsy and Redbubble have got you covered. Etsy offers both handmade and vintage items, and Redbubble products are made from user-submitted art. Both are great places to find a more unique gift for your Star Wars fan.

Luckily for me, my boyfriend never reads my blog, so my shopping is now complete. Enjoy the gifting, and see you next Tuesday!

Panthers are Still Undefeated

December 1st, 2015

So last week, we drank too much took a little holiday. We are back to talk about the Panthers, who are now the only NFL team that remains undefeated this season (thanks, Broncos!). If, like me, you don’t really follow football regularly, you may not be aware that this is a pretty big deal. Since my boss likes to make me cry expand my knowledge, she chose this week’s topic, knowing it would require actual research on my part. Even though I’m  much for watching sports (aside from the occasional UFC match), there has been a sense of excitement building with Cam Newton and company’s performance this season so far.

sirpurr

Of course I started with Wikipedia, and I was immediately gratified to discover that our mascot’s name is Sir Purr. Sir Purr. I really enjoy saying that, and will likely give my next cat that name. Since I know very little about the sport, other than being vaguely aware of what the quarterback does, I am providing the below links to places where football-types speak much more intelligently and eloquently on the Panthers, their chances, and other sportsy stuff. Even not being a huge fan of the sport, it is admittedly pretty cool that they have been spanking the other teams doing so well, especially given that they have never been undefeated this far into the season. Makes me feel kinda fuzzy for my home state, and I may just end up watching Sunday’s game against the Saints. Go, Panthers! See you next Tuesday.

Put the Giving In

November 18th, 2015

Since we talked about the thanks (for alcohol) portion of the upcoming holiday last week, our boss lady thought it essential to mention the giving part. This time of year it is especially important to consider those in need, as the cold temps and constant reminders of family can be really difficult for people that have to do without the things, and support systems, that so many of us take for granted. There are many ways and places that you can help, here are just a few ideas for you to get with the giving.

kwcares

Since we at The Chaney Group are all Keller Williams agents, I would be remiss to not mention KW Cares. This is a non-profit that helps members of the KW family that are faced with hardships.

Expanding beyond the KW family, both the High Country and Charlotte have some ways to reach out:

HOSP_LOGO-02_paint

Hospitality House is a crisis agency that helps address the issue of homelessness in Watauga and surrounding counties. Share the Warmth has partnered with Ashe County Coalition for the Homeless to collect and distribute coats and blankets, so those in need can make it through the brutal mountain winter.

download

Charlotte has the Crisis Assistance Ministry to help families in immediate financial need, and also provides counseling services to assist with future financial stability. The Dilworth Center has been making recovery possible for many families in our region, providing treatment, counseling, and after-care.

Going outside of NC, DAV assists those who served our country nationwide, while Responsible Charity and Doctors Without Borders help those in need on a global scale.

In case you’d like to check out more options, or verify where your money is going, Charity Navigator is a site that allows you to ensure you are giving intelligently. Thanks go to Travis, the CPA for half of our group, for providing that info. He’s awesome at what he does, and you can check out his skills here and here. With the holidays looming, it’s time to remember that we are all human, and that we all need a little extra love and care sometimes. Be thankful for what you do have, hug your boss/cousin/buddy, and take a little time for those without. See you next Tuesday!

Better Holidays Through Beverages

November 11th, 2015

Good evening! The holidays are upon us, and what better way to tolerate enjoy time with the family than some tasty beverages? So, as I sit here watching let’s plays on YouTube, I will bring you some of my personal favorites.

We’ll start with the best thing that you can ever take to the face, Coquito. This is what regular egg nog wishes it could grow up to be. It it serious coconutty goodness, and a must-have during the holidays. Or, a random Thursday.

Powderhorn Open House on Saturday

November 4th, 2015

I know I posted about this previously, but as I am still recovering in VA, and as this open house has multiple properties, I thought a repeat was in order. November 7th, from 1:00-4:00 p.m., Powderhorn will have an open house for several listings. This community is awesome! Not only do you have incredible views, but you also get access to the pool, lake, clubhouse, and campground. Come check it out this Saturday, and see why Powderhorn Mountain epitomizes all that is good about living in the High Country.

Enjoy the weekend with us, and I will see you next Tuesday (with new content)!
