Sparta, the county seat for Alleghany County, is located about an hour from Boone near the North Carolina/Virginia border. An easy ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway will take you from Sparta to I-77. The Alleghany Courthouse and Jarvis House are on National Register of Historic Places. Every year Sparta hosts Mountain Heritage Festival, a late summer celebration of music and crafts, and on the first Saturday in December you can attend the Christmas Craft Fair.
