Jefferson, the county seat of Ashe County, is located about 25 miles from Boone. The town of Jefferson is approximately 2 square miles with 20% of that being the New River. Access to New River State Park and Mount Jefferson draws hikers and naturalists. Christmas tree farms are an important part of the Jefferson landscape. The area is rich in history and celebrates its heritage during Christmas in July, the Ola Belle Reed Festival, and the annual Ashe County Fiddler’s Convention.
